Is Undergrowth Taking Over Your North Georgia Woods?
You've got beautiful trees but you can't enjoy them, because the ground beneath them is a mess:
Briars, privet, and saplings have turned your woods into a wall you can't walk through.
Invasives like privet and kudzu creep further every year, taking more ground each season.
The undergrowth is prime tick and snake habitat, right where your family walks.
You want it opened up, but you're afraid someone will clear-cut the mature trees to do it.
Your woods should be somewhere you walk, not somewhere you fight through.
Why North Georgia Landowners Choose Ferguson Siteworks
Our clients don't want their land bulldozed. They want the mess gone and the trees kept.
That's exactly what selective underbrush removal does. We grind out the brush, briars, privet, and small saplings while leaving your canopy standing. Opening the woods into a clean, park-like space you can actually use. And because we mulch in place, the cleared material becomes a light layer on the forest floor instead of piles hauled off or burned.
Why that matters for your land:
Selective by design — the trees you want stay; the tangle goes. You mark what stays before we start.
Mulch-in-place — no burn piles, no haul-off, a natural finish underfoot.
Fewer pests — clearing the understory cuts back tick and snake habitat near the house.
Knocks back invasives — a serious step toward getting privet, briars, and kudzu under control.

“Ben removed the undergrowth from over an acre on my property. He had to remove many Asian holly trees and small saplings to clear the property. He did a great job at a very reasonable price!”

Underbrush Removal FAQs — Ellijay, Blue Ridge & North Georgia
-
Selective forestry mulching. It grinds out brush, briars, privet, and saplings from the ground up while leaving your mature trees untouched — which is exactly what a dozer or a full clear-cut can't do. You mark what stays on the walkthrough, and we clear around it. The result is open, park-like woods with your canopy intact.
-
A bush hog mows. It knocks down grass and light brush but leaves stumps, saplings, and roots behind — so it grows right back, often thicker. Underbrush removal by mulching grinds saplings and woody growth all the way down, clearing the actual problem instead of mowing over the top of it. If you've bush hogged before and watched it come back within a season, this is why.

They solve different problems. Herbicide kills growth but leaves the dead tangle standing — you still can't walk through it, and it becomes dry fuel. Mulching removes the material physically, so your woods are usable the same day. For aggressive invasives like privet, the strongest approach is often mechanical clearing first, then spot treatment on regrowth.
-
You do. On the walkthrough you tell us what you want kept — mature hardwoods, a specific stand, a screen for privacy — and we clear selectively around it. Nothing comes out that you didn't agree to.
-
Some regrowth is natural, especially with fast invaders like privet and briars. Underbrush removal knocks it back hard and buys you years of open, walkable woods; keeps it in check long term. Think of it as a reset — not a one-and-done for the most aggressive invasives.
-
It removes the habitat they rely on. Ticks and snakes shelter in dense, low, shaded growth — open, mulched ground gives them far less to work with. It's one of the most common reasons landowners with kids, dogs, or trails call us.
